What is the Role of Japan, America and India (JAI) in Indo-Pacific region ? Know everything related to it .

Today, the entire Indian Ocean region has grown into an economic juggernaut. The global power axis has shifted from the Pacific-Atlantic to this region.Half of the world’s submarines will roam the Indo-Pacific region in the next two decades — at least half the world’s advanced combat aircraft, armed with extended range missiles, supported by sophisticated information networks, will also be operated by countries here. The next 20 years will see the expansion of space-based and space-enabled capabilities, including military capabilities. This great power brings greater responsibility on nations in the region. The Asia-Pacific region has been a playground of big power politics in the last few decades. Moreover, with America’s role diminishing in theregion, China will emerge as much more powerful. With this the countries like India face greater challenges and need to equip themselves for these. In this context, the concerned countries are coming together in form of various groupings to counter China’s adverse influence in the region. On the similar lines, Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister NarendraModi met for a trilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G-20 Summit.The 2018 G20 Buenos Aires summit is being held on 30 November and 1 December 2018 in the city of Buenos AiresArgentina. It is the 13th meetingof Group of Twenty (G20) and it is the first G20 summit to be hosted in South America.

Highlights of the meetings on the side of G20 summit
Trilateral meeting between India, Japan and US
In the first-ever trilateral summit between India, Japan and the US, the three countries focused on building a regional architecture in the Indo-Pacific region, stressing on the new framework being "inclusive". This being the first trilateral on the margins of the G-20, the meeting seals the importance of the Indo-Pacific framework as a new policy architecture in this region. In his remarks, PM NarendraModi is learned to have put out following five action points as issues with which the trilateral group should engage the countries of the region-
    • Connectivity,
    • Sustainable development,
    • Maritime security,
    • Disaster relief and
    • Freedom of navigation                                         Seeking to counter China's aggressive expansionism, the trilateral is also the core group that sustains other groups like the Quadrilateral.
Bilateral meeting with Chinese president
President Xi told PM Modi that China had started importing some commodities from India, and was hoping to import soybean as well. Both leaders expressed appreciation at the enhanced engagement especially on the border management processes.
BRICS group meeting
The Brics meeting, focused on the reform of multilateral organisations, and strengthening mechanisms like the FATF to be able to tackle terror financing.

About Indo-pacific regions and issues there
The ‘Indo-Pacific’ is a bio-geographic oceanic area, which consists of East Coast of Africa through Indian Ocean up to the Western Pacific Ocean. The notion of ‘Indo-Pacific’, a term of recent origin, evokes multiple strategic issues like the growing strategic, political and economic significance of the region.
Chinese power projection
It is ranging from Gwader in the West to the South China Sea in the East amidst neighbours rising concerns.
Threats to freedom of navigation and security of Sea Lanes Of Communication (SLOC),Implicit strategic rivalry between China and India
America’s rebalancing or Asia Pivot
Rising non-traditional security threats like piracy, drug-trafficking, climate change and others.
It has already built several new regional alliances through projects like One Belt One Road (OBOR), Maritime Silk Road, Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).President Xi Jinping, who has now acquired the status of “Core Leader”, is pushing hard for another regional alliance called the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). Significantly, the rule-based global order is also coming under tremendous pressure in the region with countries violating established norms with impunity.Multilateral institutions seem utterly helpless while countries continue with activities detrimental to regional peace.North Korea’s nuclear programme, developments in the South China Sea and increasing cyber violations are examples of this trend.

India’s role
Under the circumstances of threat to regional peace and prosperity, India can no longer remain a reticent nation in regional and global politics. In the last couple of years, India has given some indications that it has arrived. It started showing more interest in the UN’s affairs. It played a crucial role at the Paris Climate Summit and became increasingly assertive about its rights in the NSG, UN Security Council, etc.India is already assuming her responsibilities in securing the Indian Ocean region.India has been stressing the importance of keeping the Indo-Pacific construct open and inclusive, both to reassure countries of the region as well as to counter China's contention that the Quad/Indo-Pacific was an exclusive club.A strong partnership through grouping like Quad group, trilateral group between India, Japan and US, can anchor peace, prosperity and stability from Asia to Africa and from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific. It can also help ensure security of the sea-links of commerce and freedom of navigation on seas.

Significance of this trilateral grouping
Seeking to counter China's aggressive expansionism, the trilateral is also the core group that sustains other groups like the Quadrilateral. This is significant because officials from the participating countries have been recently quoted as saying that the Quad was "one of the many mechanisms" in the Indo-Pacific.It can ensure that the regional connectivity doesn’t get hampered. It can work for sustainable development of the developing countries in the region. The region is very important from the transport through sea perspective; hence cooperation and counter check on Chinese adverse influence in the region will ensure maritime security and Freedom of navigation. The region is also prone to many natural disasters like Cyclones, Earthquakes; Tsunami etc. hence, a better cooperation will ensure better Disaster relief efforts.
